One minute you’re living a charmed, sheltered life as a princess. The next minute you’re running for your life and forced to become a warrior in order to survive. Yona’s life changes in an instant but she won’t give up on her people. Accompanied by her faithful friends, she is determined to become who she needs to be in order to save her kingdom. But what will she do when she confronts her father’s killer?

Pros
Interesting world
Similar to Avatar: The Last Airbender, Yona of the Dawn’s kingdom is Kouka and it is split into five tribes: Sky, Fire, Wind, Earth, and Water. Kouka is also the home of four legendary Dragon Warriors who serve and protect the kingdom. Each of the Dragon Warriors has a special ability that makes them mighty fighters without being too overpowered.

Well-crafted villain
Throughout the story, the main villain’s actions become more and more understandable. You may not agree with his method but you can appreciate why he did what he did. For me, I don’t particularly like him but I don’t disagree with his motivation behind his actions. As Yona discovers the details alongside the reader, it aids her character arc and personal growth.

Friendships
The friendships between Hak, the Dragon Warriors, and Yun quickly became my favorite parts of the story. They have multiple heartwarming and hilarious moments as their friendships develop. I loved reading the progression from strangers to family.

Cons
Main character struggles
In the first few volumes, Yona is a challenging character to like. She is young, naive, and helpless due to a very sheltered upbringing. So when she’s forcibly thrust into danger, she is almost unbearable. Throughout the story, we watch her grow into a more responsible and capable woman. If you can push through the beginning of the story, Yona has a strong character arc.

Slow burn romance
This is truly a slow burn romance. It takes over 130 chapters before we get our first official moment between the two lovebirds. Once it finally blossoms into an undeniable relationship, the romantic moments happen more frequently. But leading up to the official moment, it is an extremely frustrating series of events where Yona is shockingly oblivious.

Overall…
If you’re looking for a combination of shonen and shojo, look no further. Yona of the Dawn is an amazing mix of exciting adventure, action, and romance. Be prepared to push through the first few volumes as Yona starts her personal growth journey.
