A seemingly unavoidable holy war approaches and Paul Atreides must rise and embrace his destiny… for a prophecy must be met as it is written.
Pros:
Cinematography
Cheers to Greig Fraser for the absolute work of art that is Dune Part 2. The lighting… framing… camera movement… all superb.
Fremen Show of Force and Final Battle
As with books, I love the end-of-movie epic battle and Dune Part 2 delivers. The Fremen have been discounted by many and it is so satisfying to witness their absolute show of force.
Most of the Actors
The Dune cast is legendary. Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Stella Skarsgard… they all delivered career-best performances. Lady Jessica and Stilgar were especially outstanding. I only wish they’d casted a different actor for the Emperor… Christopher Walken was the weakest link in this movie.
Above and Beyond Details
The commitment to the Fremen language is a level of detail that sets the expectation for Sci-Fi and Fantasy movies moving forward. It’s worth taking 10 minutes to watch Villeneuve’s interview with Stephen Colbert where he discusses the commitment to excellence regarding the Fremen language.
Cons:
Young romance
For me, Paul and Chani’s relationship is the weakest part of Dune Part 2. It’s a young love… a first love… and their screen time together doesn’t justify the intensity of that love. Paul wholeheartedly tells Chani that he will love her for as long as he breathes… which would make sense if they had an established, long-term relationship.
Overall…
Dune Part 2 is an epic, intense experience that I highly recommend. It is worth going to see it in theaters and I suggest IMAX.
