“I wouldn’t be standing here if I’d quit every time something seemed impossible to overcome.”

Mix together a brutal military school, dragons, and 20-somethings hormones, and you’ve got Fourth Wing. This story takes you on a nerve-wracking, addictive ride as we follow our two main characters, Violet and Xaden. Nothing comes easy and nothing is promised. We’ll see who survives.

Pros
Immediately captures your attention
It took the Kindle sample of the book to absolutely hook me. The moment I read the first chapter’s tense family moment, I knew I had to finish this book.

Addictive
Fourth Wing is a read-until-4am kind of book… a “how has it been 2 hours” kind of book… an absolute obsession that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Fast paced
Yarros doesn’t give you much downtime. If it’s not a fight, it’s a suspenseful moment. If it’s not a near-death experience, it’s a death threat. Just strap in for the nerve-wracking ride to survive.

Interesting setting and circumstance
The military school setting and tense circumstances that form the foundation of the book are captivating. We’ve got a seemingly never-ending war where success hinges on the ability to form magical bonds with dragons. If cadets survive long enough to try to bond, there’s no telling if the dragons will accept. And if they don’t accept, the consequences are severe.

Cons
Some cringey moments
As with most romances, this story’s romance has some cringey moments. Especially when you consider that most of our characters are in their early 20s.

Overall…
I unknowingly just read my first romantasy book and I loved it. Does it say something about me as a reader that I give this book 10 stars? Well… to quote my favorite character, “When did I ever give you the impression that I give a fuck what people think about me?” If you haven’t read Fourth Wing, you’re missing out.
